Download the Mac OS X LAME installer from Vas the Man’s Downloads and install it.I think the tools come on a CD with OS X, but you can join Apple’s Developer Community and download them.

You’ll need to install the Mac OS X developer tools to install LAME, as it requires some behind-the-scenes software installed with the tools.But you can install LAME and encode your MP3s using it direct from iTunes. The encoder that’s built into iTunes isn’t as good. LAME is apparently the best MP3 encoder or, at least, the best free one. It’s possible to encode MP3s using the LAME encoder directly from iTunes without too much hassle… In the dialog box that follows, select the mp3 or aac file you recorded.Last time I did this I didn’t write this down anywhere so I’ve had to find all the pages again.
In this example, the default is Student Exercises. Otherwise click on the tab you were told to use. Unless your teacher has told you otherwise, use the default tab.
Once your course opens, look at the tabs right above the track list at the bottom of the screen. 
Click on the link for the course you want. Scroll down until you see your course(s).
GW on iTunes will automatically access the iTunes Store. Chose the iTunes item on your class's Blackboard menu. Either log in directly at or go in through Blackboard. Get into GW on iTunes (not just regular iTunes). Proceed to Uploading a Recording to iTunes. When iTunes opens, control-click on the file in the iTunes library and select Convert to AAC. Now find the file you just created and click on it. Mac users: under File, Export as a WAV file, e.g. Make sure to include your name in the filename, e.g. Windows users: under File, Export an mp3 file. When done, Click on the amber stop button. Once the exercise starts, go back to Audacity and click on the red Record button. For example, if you are doing oral exercises from the your textbook's online audio page, start up the exercise as you normally would in your browser. If you are responding to prompts from an audio recording, start that audio up. After that, when you spek into the microphone, the red volume indicators should jump in reaction to your speaking. Turn the volume up high by moving the tic at the left all the way to the " +" sign. Make sure that Audcity knows that you are using a microphone. For voice recording either 16,000 or 22,050 Hz is all you need. Make sure your computer microphone is plugged in and active. You can now delete the converted file if you want and start work on your first exercise. You can now delete the original larger WAV file.ĭone! This was just a test recording. Once the file has converted, it will show up in your iTunes library. 
You need not Save the Audacity project file.įind the WAV file you recorded. (It will be quite large.) Close Audacity.
Record something (anything!) in Audacity.
